Press releases Safety is always a top priority at N.C. Nielsen and has been considered in all our solutions. This also applies to the Lithium-ION batteries, which have the technical name LiFePO4. This type of battery is considered the safest on the market as it contains no cobalt and is designed with a number of built-in safety mechanisms.

You can find six different types of Lithium-ION battery on the world market. N.C. Nielsen has chosen the safest, proven and most energy-efficient type: LiFePO4. Since 2016, this battery type has been built into thousands of machines from N.C. Nielsen and so far, not a single one of them has needed to be replaced.

“First of all, we'd like to dispel a myth. Namely that all Lithium-ION batteries are flammable. Many people have probably seen dramatic video clips of burning electric cars, e-bikes and electronics. It looks extreme, but we don't use those types of batteries in our machine solutions. They refer to a completely different type of battery that doesn't belong in internal logistics machines,” says Kasper H. Nielsen from NCN Energy Solutions.

Stands up to comparison

A comparative analysis from Boston Consulting Group Research in the US shows that LiFePO4 batteries score highest on safety. This battery type also performs better than other Lithium-ION batteries when it comes to durability, service life and payback time.

“We focus on safety when designing our Lithium-ION batteries. They must be reliable, safe and energy-efficient. They should also have some weight to them, as a forklift truck needs counterweight. “There’s no reason to compromise on quality when LiFePO4 batteries are proven to provide maximum safety under all possible conditions,” says Kasper H. Nielsen.

Thermal stability

LiFePO4 batteries offer strong thermal stability, meaning they stay cool and resist overcharging or short circuits. Overall, the batteries are highly robust and resistant to external influences:

“Our Lithium-ION batteries are extremely durable. They can handle use in very hot environments and overheating is prevented, thanks to the compartmentation of the cells. This can be an issue with other Lithium-ION batteries on the market. Conversely, the batteries can also be heated, so they can be used for cold store tasks in freezers and the like,” continues Kasper H. Nielsen.

In addition to thermal stability, batteries from NCN Energy Solutions are equipped with monitoring features for temperature, energy flow and any imbalances between the cells. Basically, this means that the battery switches off automatically if one of these measuring points is exceeded.

At the same time, LiFePO4 batteries are more robust, resilient and resistant to mechanical stress and physical impacts than other battery types. In other words, the risk of short circuits and other mechanical failure is minimised in this battery type.

Longer life than the truck

LiFePO4 batteries are designed to last for years. They often have a higher purchase price than classic lead-acid batteries, but the investment pays off due to their long lifespan and high level of safety. N.C. Nielsen guarantees the batteries for seven years and they are expected to last up to 15 years. And they may have worn out more than one truck during that time.

The LiFePO4 batteries from NCN Energy Solutions are the result of many years of development work. N.C. Nielsen has developed over 8,000 customised batteries that have found their way into a wide range of electric vehicles. The batteries are not just safe. They also offer higher capacity, good energy utilisation and fast charging times – plus, they’re also maintenance-free.

“I see our Lithium-ION batteries as a flexible, safe and robust technology that ensures high uptime in internal logistics. Batteries are gaining ground in all electrically powered machines – including machines with very high lifting capacities that operate both indoors and outdoors. They also play an important part in companies' carbon reductions, and we want to contribute to that,” concludes Kasper H. Nielsen from N.C. Energy Solutions.
