JN Spedition is located in Herning and Køge, and is part of Skandinavisk Transport Center, which focuses on sustainable initiatives. JN Spedition has installed a photovoltaic system on its roof which generates more energy than it can use. A CO2 system significantly reduces electricity consumption, climate shields insulate the outer walls, LED lights reduce consumption further, and wild flowers in open areas encourage biodiversity.
“We are working strategically and for the long term towards a green transition. We want to be seen as leaders in the transport industry and inspire others to move in the same direction. We are investing in the newest technology so we can continue to improve our green profile. All this comes at a price, but overall, these green initiatives give you the feel-good factor,” says Ove Søltoft. co-owner and chair of the board of JN Spedition.
The transition to green technology is also reflected in JN Spedition's machinery. All the stackers, pallet trucks and reach trucks for internal transportation now run on lithium-ION batteries rather than lead acid batteries. This means that they can be charged with green energy from the company’s own photovoltaic system.
It is by no means a coincidence that JN Spedition is located in Køge and, as a key player in Skandinavisk Transport Center, JN Spedition strives to set high standards for the other companies in the area to follow. It's about setting a good example and encouraging community cooperation by, for example, providing electric stands for trucks, paving the way for hydrogen solutions and offering environmentally friendly charging facilities for refrigeration machines.
“We are ready to immerse ourselves in the green transition. We all need to work together to get the charging infrastructure in place across the country. We have a strong desire to be able to deliver goods to city centres at night, and to do so quietly, emission-free and without causing inconvenience to other road users. Of course, this requires the right framework and political will, which is something we are pressing for,” points out Ove Søltoft.
The arrival of the brand-new Terberg YT 203 EV terminal tractor marks another step on the green transition journey for JN Spedition. It was chosen as a green alternative ahead of the diesel version of the same machine, promising the same performance but with the crucial difference that it doesn’t emit CO2 or NOx.
“With this new Terberg we are fulfilling our green ambitions with the latest technology. We have a bespoke solution with our advanced charging system and lithium-ION batteries. We charge it with our self-generated surplus electricity in the morning, so it is ready to move the refrigerated trailers at the terminal in the afternoon. It is quiet, emission-free and effective,” says Kenneth Bell, director and co-owner of JN Spedition in Køge.
At JN Spedition, the new Terberg YT 203 EV will help to optimise internal logistics by enabling a large number of refrigerated trailers to be moved to the right ramps at the right time. There are no tractors at the terminal in the afternoons as the drivers need to observe the driving and rest time regulations. This is where the new Terberg comes into its own, shuttling the full and empty refrigerated trailers around the terminal.
“Our terminal employees are very taken with the electric Terberg terminal tractor. It offers a high degree of comfort, with a quiet drive, easy access to the cabin and cables, improved suspension with minimal vibrations and good vision from the driver’s seat. It hasn’t taken the employees at the terminal long to get to grips with the machine and embrace the new technology, so that is an added bonus on our green journey,” adds Kenneth Bell of JN Spedition in Køge.
